What is Korean Red Panax Ginseng?

Ginseng is one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat several medical conditions. 

Ginseng is a slow-growing plant with fleshy roots. It consists of a light-colored, forked-shaped root, a relatively long stalk, and green leaves with an oval shape.

Panax comes from the Greek words, loosely translated as “all-healing.” The English translation for ginseng (rénshen in Chinese) is “man-root.” The literal English translation for the term Panax ginseng is “all-healing man root.”

There are two main types of ginseng: Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). Studies have found that different types have different benefits. In traditional Chinese medicine, American ginseng is considered less stimulating than the Asian variety.

This amazing plant can be classified three ways, depending on how long it is grown: fresh, white or red.

Fresh ginseng is harvested before 4 years, while white ginseng is harvested between 4–6 years and red ginseng is harvested after 6 or more years.

Ginseng contains two significant compounds: ginsenosides and gintonin which have been shown to have a variety of beneficial effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects. 

A superfood worth of its title

Korean Red Panax Ginseng is packed with uniquely potent vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients that support health and wellbeing like no other superfood can. Results of clinical research studies demonstrate that Korean Red Panax Ginseng may improve psychological function, immune function, and conditions associated with diabetes. Other studies also found positive effects on brain function and behavior in people with Alzheimer's disease [3] [4].

Other benefits of Korean Red Panax Ginseng

Ginseng, particularly Korean Red Panax Ginseng, may also help increase insulin production, enhance blood sugar uptake in cells, and provide antioxidant protection while helping protect the cardiovascular system. Ginseng has been used for the treatment of heart failure and to protect tissues from damage when an organism is under stress [8].

Ginseng may also be helpful in reducing the risk of certain cancers [9] and may help improve the health of patients undergoing chemotherapy, reduce side effects, and enhance the effect of some treatment drugs [10].

How to add Ginseng to your diet

Ginseng root can be consumed in many ways. It can be eaten raw or you can lightly steam it to soften it.

It can also be stewed in water to make tea. To do this, just add hot water to freshly sliced ginseng and let it steep for several minutes.

The extract can be found in powder, tablet, capsule, and oil forms.

How much you should take depends on the condition you want to improve. Overall, daily doses of 1–2 grams of raw ginseng root or 200–400 mg of the extract are suggested. It’s best to start with lower doses and increase over time.

Look for a standard ginseng extract that contains 5% total ginsenosides, and consume it before meals to increase absorption and get the full benefits.
